Open Phrasebook is a personal, non-commercial project run by one person, Natan. It shows no ads, uses no analytics or tracking, and sells or shares nothing.

Signing in

The beta at beta.openphrasebook.com is open only to invited people. Cloudflare Access checks that your email address is on the list, either through your Google account or with a one-time code sent to your email. Google tells the sign-in your email address and name; only the email address is used, to let you in. Cloudflare keeps you signed in with a cookie for a while (up to a month).

What the site keeps about you

• Your email address, on the list of invited people.
• Your profile, which you fill in: the name you want to be called, the form of address (man or woman) and the languages you study, and whether the rude-words page is shown.
• Friends you invite: their name and email address, and that you asked.

Phrases you suggest, mistakes you report and words you search for are kept without your name or address. To translate a suggested phrase and record its sound, its text is sent to outside services, again without who sent it.

On your device

Your settings (voice, theme, starred phrases and the like) and an offline copy of the pages stay in your browser's storage and never leave your device.

Email

Invitations and the occasional "What's new" letter come from Natan's Gmail. To stop the letters, reply to one and say so.

Where it lives, and deleting it

The pages are served by Cloudflare; the data above is kept on a small server in Natan's home. To see or delete what is kept about you, or to leave the beta, reply to any email from Open Phrasebook: your profile and address are removed. A place unused for about a month may be given to someone else.
